Printer uses wrong filament on latest nightly #78

Description

I have 4 filaments loaded, they are shown correctly on the printer, in orcaslicer and in the kx-bridge. When printing a multicolor print the first color that was printed (which should have been from slot 3) was actually from slot 4.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. I created a layered stl and painted each of the 3 layers in a different color in orcaslicer
  2. I sliced it and all colors looked correct and mapped to the right slot
  3. When printing it should start with slot 3, but instead it uses slot 4

Expected Behavior

Printing with the right colors

Actual Behavior

Wrong color.

I tried resyncing orcaslicer, stopping and starting the print, restarting orcaslicer.

  • KX-Bridge Version: latest nightly (docker build from the most recent nightly branch)
  • OrcaSlicer Version: 2.4.1-kx1
  • Moonraker/Klipper Version: unknown
  • Operating System: debian 13 lxc

previous version of orcaslicer-kx also produces the same result. It's getting too late for me to print today, so hopefully the gcode helps and otherwise I'll see if I can do more tests for you tomorrow. I have a very busy day tomorrow and Thursday however, so my next reply might take a bit longer

I've now been able to reproduce the error. The first layer should be red, but it's printing white. The slot selection jumps by +1. I'm working on a fix. Thank you for this detailed feedback and your cooperation. There have been reports of this kind of error before, but I couldn't really figure out what was causing it. I now need to check in OrcaSlicer and in Bridge to see what's actually causing this error.

Root cause identified and fixed.

The printer interprets ams_box_mapping as an ordered list where entry N corresponds to tool change TN in the GCode. When T0 is unused (e.g. only T1/T2/T3 are used), the bridge was sending a compressed list starting at index 0 — so T2 (red, slot 3) mapped to entry 2 which the printer read as slot 4 (white).

Fix: the mapping now always includes placeholder entries for skipped paint indices so the list positions match the GCode tool numbers exactly.

Fix is live on nightly:

docker compose pull && docker compose up -d
